Assistance Fund Created for 13 Hmong Children Orphaned After Father, Brother Die in Auto Accident

The surviving relatives of Xia Pao Xiong and his son Hue Xiong, both killed in an auto accident in Anoka County on January 18, 2002, have announced the creation of an assistance fund for Xiong's 13 orphaned children.

“This is a terrible sadness for these children losing both their father and a brother in the accident,” said Zoua Yang, family spokesperson and Xiong's niece. “Their mother, La Vang, died of a stroke five years ago.”

Donations to the Xiong family can be sent to: Xia Pao Xiong Memorial Trust fund, TCF Bank, 2100 Snelling Ave., Roseville, MN 55113-6000.

Xiong, 49, and his son Hue Xiong, 12, were killed in Ramsey when their vehicle collided with a pickup truck. Another son, Vang Xiong, 15, was also seriously injured and is still recovering at home.

Xiong, better known by his people as Nhia Long, was revered as a great leader in both his clan and the Hmong community here and throughout the country. Xiong, born in Laos in 1952, fought alongside U.S. forces during the war in Vietnam. He rose to the rank of First Lieutenant and served as a key aide to General Vang Pao in the Royal Lao Army.

James P. Carey, attorney and partner with the Minneapolis-based law firm of Sieben, Grose, Von Holtum & Carey, will represent Xiong's survivors.
