Winter Bicycle Commuting

Safety is always our first concern when commuting by bicycle. I enjoy commuting by bicycle as often as my schedule permits. Remember that snowy days can create additional hazards for us on the roadways we share with motor vehicles. Metro Transit provides a safe alternative when the bike lanes have not been fully cleared of snow.

The City of Minneapolis provides some guidelines when you find yourself sharing the road with motor vehicles. http://www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/bicycles/accidents.asp.

Some of the best advice is to position yourself as a motor vehicle would when waiting at an intersection. Hugging the curb near other vehicles can lead to an accident when inattentive drivers turn into you. This is the cause of 30% of our local bicycle vs.. motor vehicle crashes.
