Ride At Your Own Risk:

Motorcycles Not Covered By No-Fault

Summer motorcycle rides are fun. But before you jump on, beware that very few motorcyclists carry no-fault insurance. If there is an accident, medical bills and lost wages can only be paid by pursuing a liability claim … a process that can take several years to complete. In the meantime, you will be held responsible for the bills.

“My clients are absolutely amazed when I tell them about this,” said Jeff Sieben, personal injury attorney at Sieben, Grose, Von Holtum & Carey. “But the state does not require no-fault coverage on motorcycles.”

All of the personal injury attorneys at Sieben, Grose, Von Holtum & Carey have handled this type of case over the years. Typical is the recent case of a young woman riding on a cycle owned by her boyfriend. The driver of a car ran a stop sign in front of the couple. They could not stop in time to avoid a collision. Both the woman and her boyfriend were injured. The good news: we were able to recover money from the driver’s liability policy to pay for the woman’s medical bills and lost wages. The bad news: it took nearly a year to get the money.

“Motorcycle accidents usually result in severe injuries,” Sieben said. “Unless you have good health insurance and a disability policy, you will face huge medical bills on top of the pain and suffering. These are important factors to consider before driving, riding as a passenger, or allowing family members to ride a cycle.”

Editors Note: Motorcyclists can buy no-fault in addition to the liability insurance they must have as required by law. But most don’t because the costs are five to 10 times the cost o standard car insurance. Our advice … ask before you ride!
