They’re Trying To Take Away Your Rights
By Harry A. Sieben Jr.
President, Sieben, Grose, Von Holtum & Carey, Ltd.
Those in power didn’t take people like George Hewes seriously. Yet this man, who you’ve probably never heard of, became one of the most famous freedom fighters in our nation’s history. Here’s his story…
Oppose Corporate Attack On Fundamental Freedoms
You wouldn’t have thought George Hewes a very remarkable man if you met him. He was a lowly shoemaker short in stature at 5 foot 1 inch and even shorter in wealth and influence. True to his mild nature, he normally kept his thoughts to himself unless those with power and money tried to use their status in society to take advantage of his friends and family in the working class.
Nevertheless, late on the evening of December 16, 1773, George Hewes marched into the history books as one of the greatest freedom fighters in American history. Daubed in coal dust and dressed like a Mohawk Indian, Hewes joined a group of common men just like himself and crept aboard three ships anchored at a place called Griffin’s Wharf. In the wink of an eye, 200 barrels of the finest East Indian tea were dumped into Boston harbor sending a message of defiance and liberty to those who abuse power that still echoes with us today.
Of course all Americans know this historic event as the Boston Tea Party, but very few of us have ever heard the name George R.T. Hewes. After fighting the British for nearly two years in the War of Independence, he stepped off history’s great stage and back into the everyday existence of a husband, father and shoemaker.
Ole George taught us a very important lesson: if regular citizens don’t stand up for their rights, someone WILL take them away. For 50 years, we have represented people like you who have fought back when justice was denied by rich and powerful corporate interests. Yet, we believe that these rights – your rights – are slipping away under the barrage of one of the most carefully orchestrated propaganda campaigns in our nation’s history. What it is campaign to take away your rights. It is attack on the very heart of our civil justice system intended to take away your right to a jury trial.
You’ve heard it called “frivolous lawsuits;”
No matter what label you put on it, we think it is an insidious attack on the very heart of our civil justice system.
