Recent $15.5M recovery bucks general trend

While they grab headlines when they come, multimillion dollar verdicts in personal injury and medical malpractice cases are rare in Minnesota, trial lawyers say.

The scarcity of such results explains the attention paid to the eye-popping $15.5 million jury verdict entered in Ramsey County recently. The case involved a child who was born with cerebral palsy and other health problems after hospital staff allegedly failed to respond to signs of distress in the delivery. The jury award included $9 million in future medical and home care expenses, with the balance in lost future earnings, past medical expenses, past and future pain and suffering and lost services.
