500 pound Spring Pins Man and Fractures Leg in 5 Places, $500,000 Settlement

Settlement/Verdict: $500,000.00

Attorney: James P. Carey
Practice Area: Worker Injury
Client Injury: Fractured Leg

Jim Carey represented a man who worked for a Recycling Company that contracted to demolish a large machine in a particle board factory building in Cook, MN. The machine was 3 stories above ground and 2 stories below ground. Our client was using a cutting torch to cut out the supports holding up a 26,000 pound plate that was located on the ground floor of the machine.

As he was cutting the supports, he heard a loud noise above him. Before he could jump off the ladder, he was struck by one of the giant springs, which he described as being 5-6 feet tall and weighing 250-500 lbs. After he was hit by the spring, he was pinned underneath it. Our client sustained a crush injury to his right leg. He had 5 compound fractures of the tibia and fibula. He has two inches of bone missing from his leg as well as nerve damage. He has a rod in place where the two inches of bone is missing. Jim Carey settled his claim against the factory for $500,000.
