Attorney: Paul F. Schweiger
Practice Area: Medical Malpractice
Client Injury: Hand and arm injuries
Our client saw an orthopaedic surgeon for complaints of pain at the base of his right thumb. The surgeon diagnosed CMC arthrosis and recommended a CMC interpositional arthroplasty with trapeziectomy. During the procedure, the surgeon unknowingly removed the scaphoid rather than the intended trapezium.
Following the surgery, our client continued to have pain at the base of his thumb and also began to have wrist pain and stiffness. Approximately eight months after the surgery he went to see a different orthopaedic surgeon who diagnosed the missing scaphoid and performed a four corner fusion to stabilize the remaining bones in the wrist. This procedure resulted in some decrease in range of motion in the wrist and some loss of strength.
Paul Schweiger filed a claim against the original surgeon and the case was settled for $175,000.
