The parents of an 11-year-old Minnesota girl who spent more than a month in the hospital because of an illness caused by an E. coli-contaminated hamburger have reached a settlement with Cargill, Paul Downes, the family's attorney said.
The girl became ill in 2007 after eating contaminated hamburger supplied by Cargill Meat Solutions Corporation. The hamburger meat was linked to an E. coli outbreak that led Cargill to voluntarily recall about 845,000 pounds of frozen ground beef patties.

Civil lawsuits have been filed against Chisago County in connection with a crash that involved a county van transporting veterans from the VA Medical Center at Fort Snelling.
Motorist Bobby Tomlin was killed in the crash on Interstate 35W in New Brighton. Van driver Richard Carroll, who worked for Chisago County's Veterans Services program, lost consciousness at the wheel and also died.
Attorney Paul Downes, who is representing Jessica Tomlin, argues in court documents that Chisago County is responsible because of its "negligent hiring and retention" of Carroll, who had a documented history of heart trouble.

Banana Joe's Sports Bar & Grill was negligent in refusing Dorick Roy's request to leave by the front door, away from the crowd departing at closing time, shortly after a confrontation between Roy's friend and another man. Roy was attacked by a man wielding a bottle, the same man who had fought with his friend, said Roy's attorney, Paul Downes.
