Approach Every Crossing with Caution

Treat every railroad crossing as potentially dangerous, regardless of whether you see warning lights or hear bells. Freight trains mainly operate based on demand and logistics rather than published timetables. When approaching a railroad crossing, assume that a train may appear at any moment, and proceed with caution.

Respect Warning Signals

Crossing signals are not suggestions. Red flashing lights, bells, and lowering gates mean stop and wait. It certainly does not mean “try to make it through in time.” Attempting to beat a closing gate or race across tracks before a train arrives is gambling with your life and the lives of your passengers. Always stop at least 15 feet away from the gates.

Don’t Rely on the Horn

Many communities have established "quiet zones" where trains don't routinely blow their horns, except in emergencies. Even outside quiet zones, engineers may not always sound the horn. Never rely on a train horn as your primary warning system. Always look both ways before crossing.

Plan Your Route Through Crossings

Before entering any railroad crossing, make sure you have enough space to completely clear all tracks on the other side. Getting stuck on tracks because of traffic backup ahead puts you in immediate danger. Unlike cars, trains can't swerve or stop quickly to avoid people or vehicles.

Keep Moving

Once you enter the crossing, keep moving. Don't stop on the tracks for any reason. Only stop once you have completely cleared the tracks by at least 15 feet.

Be Extra Careful at Multi-Track Crossings

Some crossings have multiple sets of tracks. Just because one train passes doesn't mean another isn't approaching on parallel tracks. Always check all directions before proceeding.

Know What to Do in an Emergency

If your car breaks down or gets stuck on the tracks, get out immediately and move away. Don't try to restart the engine or push the vehicle off the tracks. If you see a train approaching, move toward it (counterintuitive as this seems) so debris from your car won't hit you if there's a collision. Just be careful not to get too close to the train itself. Remain a safe distance from the tracks.

Walking or biking near railroad tracks requires extra vigilance. Modern trains are surprisingly quiet, especially compared to the loud, clanking freight trains of previous generations. You might not hear one approaching until it's too close to avoid.

Stick to Designated Crossings

While it might seem convenient to cut across tracks to reach your destination faster, this choice puts you at serious risk. Railroad companies spend significant money maintaining official crossing points with proper sight lines and safety features.

Eliminate Distractions

Put away phones, remove headphones, and pause conversations when approaching railroad tracks. Your full attention could mean the difference between a close call and a tragedy.

Understand Railroad Property Rights

Railroad tracks and the land around them are private property. Walking along tracks or using them as shortcuts is trespassing, regardless of whether you see "No Trespassing" signs.

Every railroad crossing has emergency contact information posted nearby. If you spot damaged signals, dangerous conditions, or witness an accident, use these numbers to alert authorities quickly. By acting fast, you could save others.
